I say we, as a people and society, can’t afford companies like this. Shut ‘em down, penalize their officers with serious financial sanctions and jail terms, and see if other energy companies clean up their act. If they don’t, they get the same treatment. The “free market” can’t account for indirect costs like this. 

On another note, there is no such thing as a free market. If you want to stop monopolization, you need regulating forces to do so — meaning even the right wing version of the free market needs government help to exist.
